After Reading  Les Misérables                普一1 38號 劉洺甄

Valjean, the main character, was released from prison after nineteen years. Because he was a prisoner, he was treated badly. After a bishop's forgiveness and grace, he decided to live as a new person and be a good citizen. A few years later,  he adopted Cosette, after her mother Fantine was dead. Since the protagonist gave up his original identity, the inspector, Javert, was chasing after them. After years of moving, Cosette fell in love with a guy named Marius, who took part in the revoiution. knowing Marius's role in the event, Valjean didn't want his daughter to have any relationship with him, because the young man could die at any moment. However, in the end, he agreed with the marriage of Marius and Cosette. On the wedding day, the groom knew that Valjean was his lifesaver!  When he and his wife went to the church where the main character lived. They had a talk, and the respectable old man passed away peacefully.

When I first read this book,  I was shocked about the world in the novel. It was dark and full of pain. People were having difficulty feeding themselves!  It was hard to imagine living in modern days when food and peace are everywhere. And there is a character that catches my eye. The poor mother Fantine. She had done everything she could to keep her daughter alive. She sold her beautiful long hair, her front teeth and even her body to the brothel to provide everything for her child, but died without seeing her daughter. This ending was depressing, but in this world it really happens. And Inspector Javert, who was chasing Valjean for years, committed suicide in the end. He was struggling in his mind whether to arrest the protagonist. He couldn't decide and ended his life. This seems to be a foolish act. However, he couldn't choose which side to stand. One side was his lifelong belief, and the other side is the man who saved his life!  It's hard to make a decision,  so he opted for another crazy way. Alas!
