A convict Jean Valjean was released from a French prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. When he arrived at the town, no one wanted to help him. Luckily, Valjean knocked on the door of Bishop Myriel, who treated Valjean with kindness. However, Valjean stole his silverware. When the police arrested Valjean, Myriel covered for him and made him a promise to be an honest man. To achieve the agreement, Valjean masked his identity and uses the name”Madeleine” . He became the mayor of Montreuil. Fantin, a young woman who works in Madeleine’s factory. Her daughter, Cosette, was being cared for by the Thenardiers, an innkeeper. Unfortunately, Fantin was fired and forced to sell her body. Javert arrested Fantin, but Madeleine stopped it. He shows his true identity. Valjean went to bring Cosette back. They moved to Paris. Years later, a man, Marius, fell in love with Cosette. But his grandfather disagreed. Heartbroken,  Marius  decided  to join his friends who had started a political uprising. Valjean set Javert free. Javert felt confused and killed himself. Valjean tool dying Marius to his grandfather. Finally, his grandfather agreed with Marius and Cosette’s marriage. Valjean dies in peace after he gave his blessing to this couple.

After reading Les Misérables, I feel it truly touching. In addition to the moving plot, it faithfully presents the many facts of French society in the 19th century. In the story, Valjean tries to help somebody else, but in people’s eye, he is just a convict. But Valjean doesn’t mind, keeping on helping those in need. I am very touched by this sentiment. During the French Revolution, people’s lives were very difficult. In such a hard era, people often only thought of themselves in order to survive, and ignored many other people. Right now, we enjoy a life that no one could have before, but in the different environments and countries of the era, there are still many people who need to be cared about. If people can be more like Myriel to take care of these people, and all the misfortunes in the world will disappear and our world will become much better.
